Too Old for AG???

You're never too old for AG! I've been collecting for almost 19 years since I was 9 and haven't ever stopped.

I believe I am the same age as you, or around the same age as you, and I am still going to be loving AG for a long time! Just say to your mom, "I love AG, it's what I collect, and what I like to do. I am never to old for AG! There are many other people, that are much older than me, who still love AG, and will still be collecting it for a long time".

You're NEVER too old for AG! I'm 61 & my daughter bought me the bitty baby starter set for Christmas last year because the things in the pink suitcase jumped out at me & I HAD to have them. It was more cost effective to get the doll too so I even got a new baby out of it! When AGT21 came out I fell in love with her. I got the surprise of my life when I discovered her under the Christmas tree that year!

So, show your mom this thread & maybe she'll reconsider. Besides, your gift list would be very easy to work on--no hunting & shop-till-you-drop hard work. Just get the fingers working the telephone...teehee!

edited to add--Pleasant Rowland founded Pleasant Co so there'd be quality dolls & accessories to withstand play & to be (hopefully) handed down to future generations. Sure, they're expensive, but boy toys aren't cheap either.

I don't think you can ever be too old for dolls either. I've loved dolls and stuffed animals since I was little and I still collect them. There was a time in fourth grade where I threw all my Elmo stuff at a wall and decided I didn't like it any more... and then I decided that since I'd invested most of my life prior to that moment collecting Elmo, maybe I should give it a second thought. Well, my room is overflowing with lots of Elmos today [img]wink.gif[/img] . There have definitely been periods in my life where I haven't done much with the dolls except change their outfits, but they've always been a part of my life. For example, freshman year I was writing a book about them and then the next year I didn't really do much with them because my friends were making fun of me for about EVERYTHING. Then I decided to get re-in-touch with the dolls and I think it helped me a bit.

It drives my mom crazy when I wear anything that is AG out in public or when I carry a doll or stuffed animal around outside. I am really short and I think she thinks it makes me look especially young (I think that is an advantage when you're carrying around a doll... I don't get too many weird looks that way). I usually end up doing it anyway, but I try to understand my mom's point of view. Maybe your mom is worried that your friends will make fun of you for still liking dolls. ALL of my friends now know about this doll addiction, whether in casual passing, in the fact that pretty much every essay I've written for school recently has to do with AG [img]wink.gif[/img] , or in the case of my teacher, pictures I've sent her with the dolls/Elmo and her textbook.

Maybe you should ask your mom why she thinks you are too old for dolls. You could explain to her why you like them, and that lots of older adults collect them as well. If she still doesn't understand, just realize that you can't rely on her to support your collection, but she'll support you in the really important things in your life.

I understand those who think we are too old for dolls, but what about guys, why is then okay for a 40 year old to have a bobble head on his dash, isn't that a "toy" or a collection of trains, so again here we go with the double standard. Now what I get out of my girls and what my dd is sometimes 2 different things, but sometimes you have to fight against the grain. My family DOES NOT get it what so ever( the 2 who did have passed on) and won't buy anything from there and I hate I can't share my collection with them, thank God for this place! but it is my home or in your case, room and my or your $ to do with, so i hope one day your mom can understand, but if doesn't know that we are here for you to share your love. Also, to me having my girls is almost like having a pet, it is just soothing to brush their hair, change their clothes, write stories about them, just remembering and feeling of times past. I don't care what adults say, they all have their collections:star trek, star wars, sports memorilabla (sp i know), etc, so don't feel bad, just rememeber hb and that all adults have their collections, nick nacks, perfectly decorated house, etc. We are here to encourage what YOU love. Maybe ask your mom what see enjoys doing or collecting and compare it to that, maybe that might help.

Ooh, I'm going to add that also when I got Felicity in 6th grade, we had these little journals we had to write in, like about how our day was or something-nothing too personal because our teacher would read and comment on the entries. Anyway, so of course I was excited about getting my first AG doll, that I wrote about her. Well my teacher asked if I could bring Lissie in so my mom came with me one morning and I brought my Felicity in to show my teacher. And this was my least favorite teacher! I'm glad she supported my love for AG though-she had one of those teacher's guides and let me look at it. Her favorite was Molly. I wish I knew her address or something (she moved out west a few years ago) so I could tell her that I'm still collecting/playing with my dolls and to thank her for supporting my love of AG! We had a student teacher who had a Kirsten doll and either Sam or Molly and a lot of the books. She let me borrow the books to read-I borrowed Kirsten's Samantha's and Molly's books from her.

You are never to old! My dad says you don't have to give up somthing you really like, just because people say I'm to old. I had a lot of people tell me I'm to old, but I just say to them. "I like collecting dolls." Then they leave me alone. Just NEVER give up somthing you love!

I started collecting when I was about 10. I got one of the books for free from the school and then the next year I got another one. I got my first doll in late 1997 when I was 11/12. My second doll came this past Christmas! There's definitely no age limit to collecting/playing with dolls-I just got my mom into collecting this summer!

I agree with most of the others on the board that age has nothing to do with doll collecting or play. It is hard to convince someone who believes dolls are for childhood play only. When did your mother stop playing with dolls?
How did her Mother's attitude influence her decision? Might be interesting research! [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img]
